Featured Stockist: Otherwild in NY and LA

November 29, 2017

Otherwild Los AngelesOtherwild is part retail shop, part design studio, and part event space, founded in 2012 by Rachel Berks. Known for their iconic “The Future is Female” shirts and merch, Otherwild also carries a selection of jewelry, ceramics, perfume, home decor and original artworks. They are dedicated to showcasing goods made with care by individuals, and I am so pleased to have them stocking Cotton & Flax tabletop goods and pillows.

Cotton & Flax at OtherwildAs a gathering space, Otherwild hosts a variety of creative workshops, dance and music performances, readings, publication launches, and more. This month, the LA store is hosting Tarot workshops and silk scarf dying workshops, while the NY store hosts a magazine launch and a indie-clothing brand pop-up. I love that Otherwild is so tied to the concepts of creative community.

Featured Stockist: Superior Merchandise Co.

March 3, 2017

Superior Merch Co. - Retail Shop and Specialty Coffee BarI’m always happy to share new retail shops stocking Cotton & Flax products, and today’s shop is a beauty! Superior Merchandise Co. is part gift shop, part stylish cafe serving specialty coffee, in a beautiful, modern space in Troy, NY.

Superior Merch Co - gift shopSuperior Merchandise Co. carries our linen tea towels and felt coasters, as well as items from some of my favorite designers: Studio Arhoj, Moglea, and The Greater Goods.

Superior Merch Co Tea TowelsI recently got to chat with owner Felicity Jones about her beautiful retail shop — here’s a snippet from our conversation:

What time of day is your favorite to be in the shop?

I love being in the shop in the morning best – Superior Merchandise Co. in the morning is actually one of my favorite places to be, ever. We have big, turn of the century window boxes that fill our space with incredible light, draping our retail shelves in sunshine. Awash in natural light, some Sam Cooke or Bon Iver playing, sipping on a latte – that’s a pretty magical morning. In these moments I feel very lucky that this is my job. Not only is the lighting/atmosphere the best in the AM hours (and perfect for taking all those instagram pictures), but being able to help get our customers’ days started on the right foot with that first cup of coffee is so satisfying.

Superior Merch Co - Specialty coffee and baked goodsHow do you hope people will feel when they come in your store?

We like to think that SMCo is great a place to find a bit of focus + mindfulness. Hopefully our guests are put at ease amidst a clean, minimal retail aesthetic, carefully prepared coffees and a friendly greeting.

Superior Merch Co - Gifts for herWhy do you love carrying work from independent designers in your shop?

Supporting like-minded independent makers and designers is something we find gratifying on a personal level but is also just a common sense approach toward realizing our vision of offering a one-of-a-kind, curated shopping experience. We often feature lesser known (at least in our neck of the woods) or up and coming artists/makers that our customer base hasn’t yet been exposed to, which not only gives us the unique edge we’re looking for, but also helps those small businesses reach a local audience that they may not otherwise have access to.

I love indie retail shops like this! They are so much fun to browse as you sip your cold-brew, and pore over the lovely handmade items they stock on their beautifully merchandised shelves. This would be a great place to pick up birthday gifts for friends, or a little treat for yourself.

If you find yourself in downtown Troy, NY, stop by this gem of a shop!

NY Now 2016 Recap

August 24, 2016

Cotton & Flax at NY Now 2016I was honored to be invited by Join Design to exhibit my work at NY Now this week! It was an incredible experience, and I was delighted to finally return to New York to meet a new group of retail shop owners, see some familiar faces, and mingle with other designers and see their work in person.

Join Design at NY Now 2016It’s such a treat to have my work displayed alongside so many talented American designers. The Join Design booth is a curated group of emerging designers from the West Coast and beyond, and our work is rooted in craft and collaboration, which makes for a vibrant group.

Cotton & Flax at NY Now 2016More than anything, it’s just wonderful to see my work in relation to other modern designers, and to see how we connect and riff off of one another. Andrew Molleur‘s ceramic work was displayed near my tabletop goods, and the colors and geometric designs were a beautiful compliment to each other’s work.

Join Design at NY Now 2016I really enjoyed getting to know the other designers over the course of the four day show, including Melanie Abrantes, Christine from Materials + Process, Becky from Honey & Bloom, and Meagan from The Granite.

Join Design at NY Now 2016Thank you to all the wonderful shop owners, interior designers, and press who came to say hello during NY Now! I loved meeting you all, and I can’t wait to return to the show next year. Big thanks to JOIN Design for making this beautiful communal booth a reality!
