Learn How to Screen Print

May 27, 2016

How to screen print - DIY silkscreen printing with Cotton & Flax

Screen printing is at the heart of everything I do with Cotton & Flax. If you’ve been curious about how to screen print at home, I’m excited to share my expertise on how to silkscreen your own designs in my new screenprinting class for CreativeLive.

DIY screen printing can be intimidating to creative business owners, but it’s an amazing tool that can allow you to apply your designs to new materials, and see your work come alive. With this introductory online screen printing workshop, I’ll walk you through the entire screen printing process with a DIY workflow, making it accessible and approachable for anyone. You can watch this class anytime, anywhere — once you sign up, you can stream or download the class and learn at your leisure.

How to screen print - DIY silkscreen printing with Cotton & Flax

I get so much joy from sharing my love of printmaking. I hope you’ll join me for a three-hour overview of the silk screen process, where you’ll learn all about how to silkscreen at home:

  • how to create a bold design and transparency that will translate well to printing
  • the best materials and tools for beginners
  • how to create a dark room in your space
  • and best practices to prepare for screen printing at home

When you sign up for my class, you’ll receive bonus content, including a resource guide with sources for all my favorite screen printing supplies and tools. This is the resource list I would have loved when I was first starting out; it will save you tons of time as you search for screenprinting supplies to build your own print studio.

If at this point, you’re wondering, “What is screen printing?” this quick screen printing video will show you the process. These are the same screen printing techniques that I use to create all the patterned fabrics for Cotton & Flax!

Sign up for class here — when you sign up via one of the links here on the blog, you help support Cotton & Flax and encourage me to continue to share my love of printmaking. Don’t forget to tag me on social media when you take the class — I can’t wait to see what you’ll print!

A new HQ for Cotton & Flax

May 24, 2016

Cotton & Flax is moving to a new studio!

After four years of cutting, printing, and sewing Cotton & Flax products from my home studio, I’m excited to share that I’m moving into a new studio this month! The studio space is part of a larger shared studio that also houses illustrator and stationery maker Small Adventure (who you may know as one of my long-time maker friends who I’ve done in-person sales and events with in the past), as well as comic artist Malachi Ward and and writer Lisa Butterworth.

I’m still getting things set up in the studio, but I’ll be posting updates over on Instagram as the space comes together! Looking forward to hosting some classes and other events in the studio soon.

April recap

May 1, 2016

Block printing supplies

April was a big teaching month for me! I taught two workshops, one private workshop at an awesome creative company downtown, another at Makers Mess. Sharing my love of printmaking with others is such a privilege, and I can’t wait til my next workshop (TBD, likely sometime in July here in Los Angeles).

Another April highlight was chatting with Sarah Cooley for her podcast, From Maker to Manufacturing. We covered a lot of ground in our chat, and it was great to talk about the sometimes maddening process of growing Cotton & Flax from a smaller e-commerce brand to having my work carried in shops all over the United States.

This month, I have a lot of travel plans — visiting New York to check out a few trade shows, and then headed back to Portland to spend some time with friends and family. I’ll be ramping up studio production quite a bit, as well, to get new products ready for West Coast Craft, which takes place June 11th and 12th in San Francisco. Can’t wait for all the fun projects I have in store for summer!

New Coasters – Cosmic White

April 5, 2016

Modern Patterned home goods from Cotton & Flax

I’m excited to debut two new coaster sets in a beautiful new colorway: cosmic white. I’ve been wanting to experiment with tonal printing for a while, and spring felt like the perfect time to freshen up the coaster collection with a bright new addition. I chose the name cosmic white for these new coasters, riffing on this amazing scientific color that piqued my imagination last week.

I worked with my friend Jessica Comingore to photograph these new additions, and her photos are simply lovely. You’ll find them peppered throughout the site.

March Happenings at Cotton & Flax

April 3, 2016

Cutting the cake for a special anniversary at Cotton & Flax

March was a crazy month at Cotton & Flax HQ – exhausting, but a lot of fun, too. The business turned 4 years old – and I turned 30!! This month was full of great milestones.

Why Do We Have Things? the podcast

Some great conversations happened in March. I was a guest on two new podcasts: the “Why do we have things?” podcast, and The Crafter’s Box podcast. I love having the opportunity to talk about the work I’m doing at Cotton & Flax – sharing my ambitions as a business owner, the challenges of running a business as a solo-entrepreneur, and getting into more detail about my creative vision for the company. If you listened to either episode, give me a shout on Twitter or Instagram – I’d love to hear what you thought!

Erin Dollar teaching screenprinting on Creative Live

I also taught three different workshops in March, which is definitely a new record for me. I taught a block printing workshop for The Crafter’s Box, which is now completely sold out. I also taught an online intro to screen printing class with CreativeLive, which is the perfect place to start if you’ve ever wondered how I print everything you see in the Cotton & Flax shop. That’s me above, posing for a photo before the class began.

The third class I taught in March was a business class for creative business owners, called Connect with your Customers on Social Media. It’s a great workshop for any small business owner who is looking to make deeper connections with their customers, and provide real value with each post. I’ll be talking more about the classes I taught on CreativeLive in a future post, so stay tuned.

Cotton & Flax on Instagram

Another fun opportunity that came my way last month was an Instagram takeover of the Etsy Success channel! I took over their feed for a day, and shared some snaps from behind the scenes here at Cotton & Flax. It was great to meet so many Etsy sellers (and shoppers!) during the takeover.

There are lots of fun things planned for April, so stay tuned for some new products, plus a Spring sale! Don’t forget to follow along on Instagram to get more frequent updates about what’s happening at Cotton & Flax HQ.
