West Elm Local Grant – Cotton & Flax is a Finalist!

September 30, 2014

West Elm grant

I’ve got some big news! Cotton & Flax is a finalist for the West Elm Local Grant!

West Elm frequently partners with local makers + designers to hand pick regionally sourced pieces for their stores (you might remember that the LA store began carrying my work earlier this year), and this year they are awarding a $25,000 grant to help a local maker grow their small businesses from the ground up.

Similar to the American Made award I mentioned a couple weeks ago, there is a public voting component to this grant. I hope you’ll take a moment and cast your vote for Cotton & Flax – your support will help me expand into larger projects and offer a wider range of goods – including often requested fabric yardage!

Thanks for all the support you’ve shown Cotton & Flax this year. Opportunities like these have been so exciting, but it’s the day to day support from my friends and fans that makes Cotton & Flax possible.

Weekend Sketching

September 29, 2014

Cotton & Flax sketchbook

I spent hours sketching and developing new patterns this weekend, which was such a treat. Normally I use sumi ink, hand carved rubber stamps, or my brush pens to sketch pattern ideas (you can see a glimpse into my sketchbook here), but this time I brought out my watercolors and spent an afternoon painting. I’ve really been drawn to blues and greens lately, especially this dark teal color… something I might return to in the Spring.

American Made Awards – Vote for Cotton & Flax!

September 15, 2014

cotton and flax design finalist

I’m proud to share that Cotton & Flax was selected as a finalist in the Design category of Martha Stewart’s American Made Awards! It feels absolutely wonderful to have been chosen as a finalist, I think it’s fantastic that Martha Stewart honors the maker community in this way each year.

Voting starts today, and I would really appreciate your vote. Winning a one of the ten honoree spots would be incredibly beneficial for the growth of my company.  It would mean an opportunity to bring Cotton & Flax to the next level – starting with taking on new, larger projects (like printing fabric yardage, something that I’ve gotten many requests for over the years), and expanding my team here in Los Angeles.

I hope you’ll visit my profile on the American Made site to learn more about my commitment to USA-based production and the values behind my business. Your vote gets me one step closer to moving into a larger studio space and accomplishing some big goals for Cotton & Flax! If you feel inclined, please share my profile with friends and family – I’m depending on my amazing support network to spread the word about this competition. Thanks for voting, and thanks for all the support you’ve shown Cotton & Flax!

Cotton & Flax, Jungalow Style!

September 9, 2014

Justina for Cotton & Flax 2

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that I spent Saturday morning with stylist Justina Blakeney, shooting some photos of Cotton & Flax goods in her signature Jungalow style. I loved spending time with Justina, as well as talented photographer Dabito, and I think they captured my work in a way I’d never have been able to do on my own. This pair knows color and pattern like nobody’s business!

Most of all, it’s always fun to collaborate with friends. So grateful to Justina and Dabito for taking the time to make my work look so awesome!

Upcoming Workshop: Print Your Own Fabric in LA

September 8, 2014

printing on fabric with Cotton & Flax

Want to learn to print your own patterned fabric to use in your craft and DIY projects? I’ll be teaching a workshop on how to print your own patterned fabric at Common Thread Studio in South Pasadena in just a few weeks!

diycarved.jpg

In this two hour class, you will learn how to carve simple printing blocks and transfer your designs onto fabric. We will provide all the materials: linoleum blocks, carving tools, printing ink, and 2 panels of 20″x20″ fabric, plus paper for those interested in stationery design. You’ll leave with your own, custom-printed fabric, ready to be transformed into pillows, scarves, tote bags, or whatever you can dream up!

You are welcome to bring additional fabric to print on, as well. I’d recommend light and medium-weight fabrics that aren’t too roughly textured, made from cotton or other natural fibers. Can’t go wrong with a quilting cotton or a lightweight linen.

Click here to sign up for the class! Feel free to send me an email if you have any questions before the workshop, you’ll find my contact info on the About page.
