Cotton & Flax visits Momen+

September 20, 2013

momen+visit

In my ongoing effort to highlight the best fabric and craft shops in Los Angeles, and Southern California as a whole, I am excited to share my visit to Momen+! My friend Nichole had been telling me about the great selection of Japanese fabrics at Momen+, so we took a trip down to Torrence to see what they had on the shelves.

momen+ thread

Momen+ had a great selection of notions and specialty crafting supplies that I haven’t seen elsewhere. These beautiful threads, meant for hand stitching, were some of my favorites.

I loved all the different indigo fabrics, can’t get enough of that color.

ribbons and ricrac momen+

This shop was filled to the brim with beautiful fabrics, and lots of color! From the bright Echino fabrics in the first photo, to the colorful ric-rac and cotton webbing in the last, there was no shortage of color in this shop. If you live nearby, visit Momen+, you’ll find fabrics there that are hard to find, even in bigger cities!

Check out the other fabric shops I’ve visited, and if you know of a store I should visit, let me know in the comments!

New Stockist – Firefly in Venice, CA!

May 7, 2013

Firefly in Venice, CA

I am thrilled to announce yet another wonderful stockist, Firefly in Venice, CA. I stopped by earlier this week to drop off a small selection of pillows and tea towels, and I was so impressed with the selection of gifts, home goods, and clothing available – they even carry jewelry from one of my favorite local designers – Kyyote.

They have an incredible amount of stationery (and washi tape!) for all your snail mail needs.

You’d be hard pressed to comb through Firefly without finding something you love. If you live near Venice, stop by and grab something for your Mom before Mother’s Day!

Weekend Fun – Indigo Dyeing Workshop

May 6, 2013

Lookout and WonderlandBeautiful indigo curtains by Niki Livingston

I participated in an awesome workshop over the weekend, led by Bari Ziperstein and Niki Livingston, which taught the basics of Indigo dying and traditional Shibori techniques. I learned so much in just a few hours, and left the class with a simple tea towel that I dyed using a simple resist (using just chopsticks and rubber bands!)

Letting the indigo oxidize (it goes from brilliant green to blue as the dye touches the air).

Our finished tea towels. Zac’s turned out so much more complex than mine, I was a little jealous!

I hope to do classes like this more often – there are so many different traditional textile methods that I want to learn. If you live in LA, I would highly recommend taking an indigo class with Niki, she was a great teacher!

Cotton & Flax visits Common Thread Studio

April 15, 2013

A visit to Common Thread // Cotton & Flax

In my continuing effort to highlight the best fabric and craft shops in LA, I am excited to introduce you to Common Thread Studio! This unique little shop in South Pasadena is part fabric store, part sewing and screenprinting studio, and part gift shop. Even if you don’t know how to sew, this shop is a great place to pick up a gift for your best lady friend, or just to grab a few rolls of washi tape for yourself.

If you do enjoy sewing, you’re in for a treat, because Common Thread stocks a well curated assortment of fabrics. Jin, the owner, has a great eye for patterns, and always carries a great selection of fun prints. The shop also has sells all the sewing accessories you’d expect – thread, needles, and even a fun assortment of imported buttons and harder to find sewing patterns.

Common Thread offers a range of sewing classes, and if you’d prefer to learn at your own pace, they offer private lessons, as well. Their workshop space offers both regular sewing machines for beginners, and professional tools and industrial equipment for professionals.

Common Thread turns four this month! Help them celebrate by stopping by and checking out this great independent fabric store.

Thanks to everyone who came out to Eastside Handmade, it was great to meet so many creative people this weekend. Reminded me of all the things I love about doing in-person events like this. Hoping to do more handmade marketplace events this summer, I’ll be sure to post info here on the blog for the next sale.
