I was thinking, yesterday, about how long I’ve had my sewing machine for. It was a gift from my mom in my teenage years, and it’s a very similar model to her own machine, which she used to teach me to sew. I remember how frustrated I initially was while she taught me how to thread the machine, how complicated it seemed. Now I could do it with my eyes closed.
I am lucky to have had my interest in craft nurtured in this way. I’m also lucky that this sewing machine seems to handle whatever I can dish out, and with regular oiling, has yet to have any major problems (knock on wood!) I know there are fancier machines out there, and it’s possible I could work faster with an industrial sewing machine, but I’m going to keep using this one for as long as I can.
I’ve started thinking about buying a sewing machine (I’m an absolute beginner), but I got overwhelmed so quickly reading reviews of different brands and models. It was weird thinking of it as a (potentially expensive) piece of technology, like buying a car or a computer!
Annie, I think I would be the same way if I tried to shop for a sewing machine now. There are so many fancy machines out there, but knowing how I use my machine, I just need something that can do a few basic stitches, and is built to last. Good luck on your search!
Like you, my mom taught me how to sew on her (very) old machine. When I moved out years ago, I didn’t sew for quite a while, until my aunt gave me her old machine. Now I’m happily sewing new products with it which will soon be for sale! It’s a really old machine, compared to yours, but it works like a charm. Plus I wouldn’t know what it’s like to sew on a fancy new one anyway, so let’s keep it that way for a while 🙂
Can’t wait to see what you’re making, Inge! I’m right there with you, hoping my sewing machine will last me a long, long time.
