Valentine’s Day DIY – Eraser Heart Prints

February 5, 2013

Patterned valentines DIY from Cotton & Flax

Riffing off my other eraser printing DIY project, which uses a new pencil eraser to make cute polka dotted gift wrap, I thought I’d take that DIY a little further for Valentine’s Day. I love using stamps to make patterned gift wrap or cards, and carving your own heart stamp is super easy!

DIY Supplies

Here’s what you’ll need:

  1. Varied cards or papers
  2. Envelopes
  3. Stamp pad
  4. Carving tools (I use an x-acto knife and a small printmaking carving tool)
  5. One brand new pencil with an eraser, one pencil to draw with

eraser

Start by drawing a little heart on the unused eraser. This will be your guide as you carve.

Proceed by carefully (and I mean CAREFULLY! I don’t want anyone getting hurt!) cutting around the edge of your drawing, and cutting away the edges. It’s very easy to accidentally lob off the whole eraser if you’re going too fast, so take your time. Watch out for your fingers, those x-acto knives are sharp!

All that’s left to do is stamp! I used a black stamp pad, but you could use any color. I would love to do this project using neon pink ink. You can go super simple, just stamping a single tiny heart on the card or envelope, or you can go wild!

I made a few different versions, one of which I am sending to my sister. I made her address label using some of the leftover paper! Hope you’re inspired to send a sweet snail mail valentine to someone you love.

Holiday Markets

December 18, 2012

Cotton & Flax at Renegade Craft Fair

I’m back from our trip to San Francisco for Renegade Craft Fair’s 4th annual Holiday Market! It was an amazing show, and I met so many wonderful people last weekend. It’s really incredible to spend entire weekends getting to talk to people about my work, it’s a welcome change from working alone in my home studio most of the time.

I’ll be honest though: I’m exhausted! We had to cut our trip to SF very short, and ended up driving back to LA right after the end of the show… I spent most of Monday resting, and packing up online orders. I needed a long nap like nobody’s business!

Now all that’s left is to add the remaining merchandise back to my online shop, and begin planning for 2013! While I feel that I’ve made some big strides with Cotton & Flax this year, there is so much more I want to make next year, and even a few collaborations I’d like to pursue. So even though the craft fair mayhem is over, I’ll be keeping busy here at home, setting things in motion for the year to come.

Thanks so much to everyone who stopped by my booths at Unique LA, Renegade LA, and Renegade SF. You make this all possible!

Cotton & Flax pillows

Just wanted to share a few photos from recent holiday shows. I’ll be selling my work at Renegade Craft Fair’s Holiday Market in San Francisco this weekend, and I hope you’ll all come out and get a first hand experience of what these holiday markets are like (so much fun.)

Happy Thanksgiving

November 22, 2012

I’m feeling very thankful around here. Thankful for my blog readers, thankful for my customers, thankful for all the wonderful, creative people I’ve met this year. Just wanted to pop in to say that I’m truly grateful for the kindness you readers have shown me since I started Cotton & Flax, and I feel so lucky to share my work with you all. Next week I’ll be featuring lots of DIY projects and even a couple freebies as a token of my appreciation.

For those of you who celebrate the holiday, Happy Thanksgiving!

Holiday Shipping Announcement

November 20, 2012

I want to let all you awesome readers know about USPS holiday shipping deadlines, because some of them are coming up! Readers outside the US probably know how long packages from the states can take to arrive, but it might come as a surprise that the USPS shipping deadlines for international packages is less than two weeks away!

No matter where you live, I am happy to work with you to get your Cotton & Flax items delivered before Christmas / Hanukkah / Kwanzaa / Winter Solstice / Your loved one’s December birthday (can’t forget those Sagittarians!)

The Holiday Craft Fair season approaches!

October 29, 2012

Can you believe it’s nearly November? I can’t. It seems like 2012 has flown by, yet I’m really excited about all the events I’ve got coming up in November and December.

First off, I’m participating in FELIZ Holiday Sale this weekend in Austin, TX! I am so excited to visit Austin, I’m really looking forward to an awesome weekend of creativity and talking with lots of talented craftspeople. If you live in the Austin area, I hope you’ll come out for the sale on Sunday, it would be a great time to kick off your holiday shopping in a venue that will be jam-packed with talent. I feel delighted and honored to be included amongst so many awesome vendors.

A few weeks later, I’ll be participating in Unique LA in Los Angeles! It will be hosted in the Penthouse of California Market Center in Downtown LA on Dec. 1 + 2, and will feature tons of indie vendors selling their wares, all of which are made in America. I love doing this event (and not just because of the free drinks and snacks!)

Next up is Renegade LA, on Dec. 8 + 9,  which is held in the charming Los Angeles State Historic Park. It’s a great venue to walk around with your friends (many people even bring their dogs!), and there will be tons of food trucks and free activities as well.

Finally, my last show of the year: Renegade San Francisco on Dec. 15 + 16, which is probably my favorite show of the year. I love the venue, the Concourse Exhibition Center, and San Francisco always seems to be a great place to end my craft fair tour.
Consider this your official invitation, readers! Would love to see you there!
