Academy of Handmade Awards

February 9, 2015

Academy of Handmade Awards 1

Have you heard of the Academy of Handmade Awards? It’s a local group that takes time each year to acknowledge great work being done in the maker community, with a special focus on makers in Southern California. The nominees cover lots of categories: they honor retail shops with a focus on handmade offerings, like Cotton & Flax stockist Rare Device, craft book publishers and authors like Yellow Owl Workshop, as well as favorite individual makers like PF Candle Co., A Question of Eagles, and Melanie Abrantes (pictured above).

I was so surprised and honored to find out that the Academy of Handmade have chosen me to receive a Master Maker award at their awards show on March 7th! You can read my interview with the leaders of the Academy on their blog, where I talk about how I’ve grown Cotton & Flax over the last few years.

I’m excited to attend the ceremony on March 7th, let me know in the comments if you’re planning to be there, too!

Our new website is live!

February 2, 2015

Cotton & Flax's new website

I’m happy to announce that the all new cottonandflax.com is now live! This site is a big improvement from the previous iteration, and I’ll be adding fun new content there in the coming months – including more studio peeks and new products.

If you follow me on Instagram or Twitter, you may have heard me grumbling lately about working on a new website for Cotton & Flax. It took me the better part of a year to finish building the new site, as I wanted to customize it quite a bit to highlight the work just how I had envisioned. I am so grateful for all the folks who gave me advice and helped me assemble the new site bit by bit – it was quite a journey!

Take a look at the new Cotton & Flax site, and let me know what you think!

Cotton & Flax for Quarterly

Did you hear that Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge debuted her inaugural subscription box for Quarterly last year? She hand-selected a collection of homegoods around the theme of pattern, and Grace chose our plus print coasters to add to her box!

If you received this box as part of your Quarterly subscription, I hope you’re enjoying all your fantastically designed gifts!

2014 Recap from Cotton & Flax HQ

January 2, 2015

2014 recap - Cotton & Flax

Wow, what a year! I’m just getting back to Cotton & Flax headquarters after spending some quality time with family and friends up in Portland, Oregon. It’s only at the end of this insanely busy year that I’ve had time to really stop and reflect on how many incredible things have been happening at Cotton & Flax, and thus, in my life in general. I wanted to take a moment to thank you (yes, YOU!) for visiting the blog and supporting Cotton & Flax. I couldn’t do what I love without the support of so many amazing people in my community.

2014 at Cotton & Flax

A quick recap of some of my favorite moments of 2014: Cotton & Flax goods featured and sold in CB2 and West Elm stores. Teaching printing workshops, speaking on a panel about contemporary made-in-USA design, and teaching classes all over California. Shooting two beautiful lookbooks with Laure. Bringing Cotton & Flax to NY NOW in August, my first wholesale trade show! Exhibiting at West Coast Craft in December (alongside my friend Bianca, which made for a super fun weekend).

2014 was full of lots of hard work, and many exciting surprises, too. Hope that 2015 is just as much fun!

A Delicious Holiday Gift Basket

December 10, 2014

giftbox2

I have been collaborating this month with Sara from Matchbox Kitchen to create some holiday treats! Today she shared a delicious gift basket on her blog, which is a perfect gift for a host/hostess, or anyone who appreciates a tasty treat.

Sara combined her homemade fig and nut loaf (a new take on fruitcake – but this one is actually delicious!), her favorite coffee beans, and some felt coasters and a linen tea towel from Cotton & Flax to create a great gift set. I could also see putting delicious jams, teas, or even candies in a basket like this. You can use the tea towel to line the bottom of the basket, creating the perfect little nest for your favorite treats.

LA friends, take note: Matchbox Kitchen will be hosting a pop-up bakery event in Eagle Rock this weekend! She’ll be offering cake by the slice, doughnuts, and cookies (including my all time favorite PB&J cookies!) Find all the details here.

Los Angeles: Renegade Craft Fair is THIS WEEKEND!

December 8, 2014

renegade los angeles

It’s finally time for Renegade’s Holiday Market here in Los Angeles! I’m looking forward to spending the weekend catching up with my favorite makers from around my community, and talking with shoppers about the hard work and love that goes into my work for Cotton & Flax. Plus, I get a chance to buy gifts – it’s always more fun to buy directly from local artists and makers than to brave the mall at the 11th hour.

Renegade

Renegade’s Holiday Market takes place at the beautiful Grand Park (Downtown LA between Broadway and Spring St.) from 10-5 on Saturday and Sunday. There’s no entry fee, so bring a friend or two, and support local designers while you finish your holiday shopping!

Cotton & Flax will be at booth #164 all weekend, with tons of giftable coasters, tea towels, napkins, trivets, and pillows – plus a special sale section just for Renegade. Stop by and say hello!
